What's less often discussed is what AI cannot replace — and why getting the order wrong creates operational risk rather than reducing it.

Where AI Is Genuinely Useful in Legal Practice

There are two areas where AI tools are delivering consistent, measurable value in solo and small firm practice: legal research and first-draft document production. AI-powered research tools have become genuinely fast and reasonably accurate for issue spotting, case law retrieval, and memo drafting. For document production, AI drafting tools can produce workable first drafts of contracts, demand letters, and discovery responses.

Where AI Falls Short — and Why It Matters

Build the foundation first — clear intake procedures, reliable billing systems, consistent client communication protocols — and then deploy tools that make those processes faster.

A Practical Framework for Evaluating AI Tools

Before adopting any AI tool, ask: What specific task am I trying to improve? What does the current process require, and where does it break down? Does this tool address that breakdown? How will I evaluate whether it's actually saving time after 90 days? If you can't answer those questions, wait.
